Sunrise Walk

Watch the sunrise on Sliabh Beagh in this early morning hike.

Watch as the sunrises over Sliabh Beagh.

If you’re not a morning person this hike likely isn’t for you! This guided hike begins on April 17, 2022 before first light. We’ll hike to a suitable viewing spot and you can watch as the sun rises over Sliabh Beagh. There are few places where you’ll find more peace than this.

The hike begins at 4:30am before the sun rises. We’ll walk 3.7k to a prearranged viewing point where we’ll rest and watch the sunrise over Sliabh Beagh. Afterwards, we’ll continue on a looped walk of approximately 4.5k back to our starting point.

  • Length: 8k
  • Time: 2.5 hours
  • Format: Looped
  • Difficulty: Moderate

What’s the Terrain Like?

The terrain is a mixture of gravel paths and open blanket bog (which can be quite uneven under foot).

What to Wear?

Waterproof hiking boots are essential! We also recommend bringing a waterproof jacket and trousers, and a hat and gloves. It’s better to be prepared for all weather eventualities.

What to Bring?

You should bring a rucksack with sufficient supplies for the duration of the hike – water, snacks, sandwiches, hot drinks, etc. If you can, bring a headlight or torch. You should also pack additional clothing layers, just in case!

We’ll stop at a prearranged location to rest and watch the sunrise. A waterproof mat or similar to rest on would be advantageous. A nice hot drink would be appreciated at this point too!

Meeting Point

The hike will start at the end of the Eshnacrin Road just outside Knockatallon Village. You can get directions to the starting point here on Google Maps. If you like old school directions then head towards Tydavnet on the R186 as you leave Knockatallon Village. Take the first road to the left (this is signposted Shane Barnagh Stables). Follow this road for approximately 2.5k until you come to a barrier. There are limited car parking spaces on the right-hand-side so please car pool if you can and feel confortable doing so.

Registration is available from 4:15am at the starting point mentioned above. The hike will start at 4:30am sharp.

Tickets for this guided sunrise hike on summit of Sliabh Beagh are priced at €15 plus booking fee are are available to purchase on Eventbrite.
