Standing at 373m above sea level, the highest point of Co. Monaghan certainly isn’t one of the tallest peaks. It is, however, one of the most difficult to navigate to. As you approach the summit, the gravel track ends and the final 1.5k or so continues over open blanket bog.
Navigating to the highest point in each county in Ireland has become very popular in recent years. If you’re doing Ireland’s county peaks challenge, our guided hike is a great opportunity to complete this with a group of like-minded hiking enthausists.
The hike, on October 09, 2022, will incorporate Co. Monaghan’s highest point, the summit of Sliabh Beagh (which is actually in Co. Fermanagh), the three county hollow where counties Fermanagh, Monaghan and Tyrone meet, and the Shane Bernagh stables.
What’s the Terrain Like?
The terrain is a mixture of gravel paths, open blanket bog (which can be quite uneven under foot) and forestry tracks.
What to Wear?
Waterproof hiking boots are essential! We also recommend bringing a waterproof jacket and trousers, and a hat and gloves. It’s better to be prepared for all weather eventualities.
What to Bring?
You should bring a rucksack with sufficient supplies for the duration of the hike – water, snacks, sandwiches, hot drinks, etc. There will be a scheduled picnic stop during the hike. You should also pack additional clothing layers, just in case!

The hike will start from our premises in Knockatallon Village (adjacent to the Sliabh Beagh Hotel). Our Eircode is H18 K407. Registration is available from 9am. The hike will start at 9:30am sharp.
